The Magician is an alchemist-pulling raw, cosmic elements from the Ether into something physical and concrete. Where its predecessor the Fool is unlimited potential, the Magician is conscious will.
In this post, we will explore the Magician card as an invitation to make adorning yourself an intentional ritual of self-alignment.
Much like how the Magician traditionally pulls together the elements (earth, air, water, and fire) to create something magical and powerful, this is how personal style works. We take individual pieces, colors, textures, shapes and put them together. They then become something more. Something that reflects our psyches, desires, identities. Something that can make us feel beautiful, sexy, intelligent, powerful, protected, kind, polished, free, soft, anything we want.
That is magic.
What do you wish to embody? What do you wish to bring to a given situation? What do you want from your clothing?
With presence, an ability to sink into the senses, and self-knowledge the Magician understands the components of an outfit needed to make it satisfying to you.
In the Magician card from the Paulina Cassidy Tarot deck shown above, we see an enchanting, regal character. Their eyes are closed as they raise their scepter above their head, gathering energy to cast a spell. In front of them, beings of the Otherworld hold objects representing the four elements, or suits, that appear in the Minor Arcana of the Tarot: a Sword (Air), a Cup (Water), a Pentacle (Earth), and a Wand (Fire). In this rendition, the position of the Magician as a bridge between the ephemeral and tangible is clear. The Magician is surrounded by blossoms, green tendrils, and fairies. Being the spirits of nature, fairies are a perfect representation of this combined diaphanousness and earthliness. In a Mystic Adornment Tarot Reading, this card might signify your ephemeral visions are ready to be brought to life.
With eyes closed, the Magician concentrates, looking inward and trusting their own power to create their desired outcome.
The paradox of slowing down to speed up is shown in this unique interpretation of the Magician’s hair-spiraled into a snail shell. Snails steadily inch along the ground, most of their bodies pressed against the earth at all times, feeling every minute detail of the environment beneath them.
Slowing down to perceive the subtleties of our creations is what gives them precision and accuracy. Regarding clothing, the snail is a reminder that taking a beat to tune into our senses will help us understand what is going on when something isn’t right-and also how to course correct. If you are in a style rut but can’t figure out what is off, slow down. It might become apparent much more quickly that you’ve been trying to wear garments that feel too tailored and stuffy, or that you’ve been wearing lots of wool when you hate the physical sensation of wearing that fiber. What felt ambiguous might clarify in a moment just by taking a beat to notice. This is where refinement happens so your next iteration can be that much more satisfying.
Mystic Adornment Exercise for the Magician:
Dressing is a ritual of transformation and revelation of the self. Consider how you might turn this act into a daily moment for self alignment. It can be small and simple or as elaborate as you wish. Let it shift depending on the day or your energy levels.
For a minimal ritual, before getting dressed, take a deep breath, light a candle and set an intention for how you wish your clothing to support or express you.
When time allows, prepare your outfit in advance. Give yourself space to choose with clarity rather than haste. Small gestures like this can ripple into the rest of your day, influencing how your energy meets the world.
For something more elaborate, organize your tools for adornment (clothes, jewelry, makeup, etc.) so that your creations can be effective for you.
Choose a garment to imbue with energy: a coat for protection, a dress for sensuality, a ring for focus. You could even embroider a word or symbol into an inner pocket or tag-a private reminder of this intention.
Turn wherever you get dressed into a little altar to yourself. Decorate it with objects that inspire you-dried flowers, a perfume bottle, photos, anything that connects you to yourself and what you wish to embody.
There is power in how you show up in your life. Let your clothing be a tool for shaping the energy you bring into the world.
